Pastoral Letter 5 February

The painting by Holman Hunt is called, “The light of the world,” I am very fond of the painting. It has a lot to say to us.

  • Jesus stands with a lantern. If you open your heart and receive Jesus, he will give you light and hope. But it is an unopened door for some time, shrubs around it.
  • Jesus does not want to impose himself against our will. On the contrary, his knocking will be a gentle tap and the invitation he makes, should we choose to listen.
  • The door has no handle on the outside and therefore can be only opened from within, illustrating that we are free to keep the door of our heart locked, leaving the Divine Guest on the doorstep,  or, if we choose,  we are free to let him enter into our life.
  • It is based on the verse from the book of Revelation 3:20:

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if you hear my voice and open, I will come, and we will sit side by side, and share a meal together.”

  • Jesus said,” I am the light of the word.” He also said, “You are the light of the world.” He is the light for everyone. Pray that Jesus may shine on us to be the light of the world.

I pray for the Congregational meeting on Sunday 19 February to consider recommendation of JNC for new pastor. I will be away on that Sunday and have arranged Rev.Veneeta Lucas to take the service on that day.

Our Church life seems to be busy. Pray and uphold one another in your prayer.

Shalom!
